    The Club history....

Very little information is known about the early club history and I would appreciate if anybody that knows of any further information to please forward it to me, this is what I have found...

It is known that the club was in existence in 1938 with the help of the minutes of the Wisbech Lawn Tennis Club dated 21st June 1938. They state:- "It was learnt with regret of Mr. John Nelson's transfer from Wisbech and in view of his past services in the club it was agreed to hold a complimentary supper to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson in conjunction with Wisbech Badminton Club.  To be held at the White hart Hotel on Wednesday 29th June 1938. Tickets 3/- each all members circularised"  Mr.Nelson was on the tennis committee form 1932 and so seems fair to assume that he may well have been playing badminton from this time too.

The Corn exchange appears to be the first venue where Wisbech badminton was played, followed by Walsoken church hall at Norwich Road, Queen's School gymnasium at Queens Road, Hudson Sports center and finally playing at The Queen's School, Weasenham Lane, now renamed The Clarkson Community College.

The earliest picture in the club archive is one taken in 1954, click on the image below to enlarge.

The players named are: Mac Narborough, Ray Diggins, Roland Cook, Geoff Staniforth, Dick Kilham, Fred Hoyles, Henry Shippey, Ian Loughlin, Madge Knowles, Joan Burrall, Dick Jarvis, Marion Staniforth, Mary Kilham, Angela Narborough and Peggy Diggins

Much of the information I have is in the form of newspaper cuttings, showing mostly results and the names of those players that achieved them.  A lot of that information is more recent but interesting reading nevertheless, the pictures that go with them are open for debate!
